Indies Oppose the FDA Globalization Act of 2008

Watch this video and then read the Petition below. Sign the Petition opposing the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 by leaving your name and comment in the comments section below! The petition is for everyone: consumers and the small businesses who make the products they love!

This video summarizes the Indie Beauty Network’s position against the Discussion Draft of the FDA Globalization Act of 2008, the legislation that would put thousands of Indies out of business by forcing them to pay outrageous registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork.

If passed, this law would drive consumers back to the days when they could only choose between a few huge, faceless, nameless big box stores and brands for their cosmetics and personal care products. And fewer consumer choices always leads to higher prices.

Tell Congress you want none of it by reading this Petition and then leaving your comment below as your signature to the Petition opposing the draft law. Please include your name, city and state with your comment/signature!!

Petition

We are the owners of small cosmetics companies, and the customers who love their products.

We understand that laws must be in place to protect everyone from unsafe products, but we are outraged by the Draft Legislation that would require small cosmetics companies to pay thousands of dollars a year in registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork that would serve only to put them out of business.

If passed the legislation would deny thousands of families the ability to earn an honest living, and also deprive consumers of the variety of cosmetics and personal care products available to choose from.

We oppose this law and condemn any companies that support it as being interested only in creating an unlevel playing field where small and family owned businesses will be forced from the marketplace before they even get a chance to start out.

We urge you, as our representatives in Congress, to stop this law which would serve only to make it even harder for families to support themselves. We call instead for a real and meaningful discussion about how Congressional goals can be accomplished without enacting unfair laws that make it impossible for small businesses to survive.

In signing this Petition, we formally request that the Discussion Draft of the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 be marked up so that the legitimate concerns of small businesses and the consumers they serve can be translated into reasonable laws that protect consumers without also killing small businesses by making them pay unfair fees and comply with burdensome paperwork.

We sincerely thank you for your time.

I do not want to be forced to buy cosmetics from the big companies. I do not want to buy cosmetics that have any preservatives in them. I get horrible allergies from preservatives. I want to buy my products FRESH and not preserved in order to be able to withstand years of shelf life. I AM AGAINST the FDA Globalization Act of 2008!!

I would not be able to pay the fees & this would hurt our alpaca farm in the long run. I make the soap I use to be felted with alpaca fiber. I also make lotions because working with fiber is damaging to the skin. I need something that is not loaded with chemicals. Why is it that the small business who is making a more chemical free product being put down while Big Box businesses can load us up with chemicals & that not be an issue? Merian in Somerset, VA

I strongly oppose the FDA Globalization Act of 2008. As a consumer, my friends, family, and I have directly benefited by the choices and alternatives offered to me by smaller companies who are able to customize products that resolve particular problems. These solutions and alternatives are not offered my larger businesses. I believe that this act would severely limit consumer choice and would have a detrimental impact to small businesses which are already been burdened by the unsteady state of our economy.

As a woman running my own business I find the rising costs of supplys hindering my business. Any added tax or cost would put me out of business at this time.

I am against the FDA's proposed Globalization Act. It would impose an unfair burden on small independent cosmetics businesses. Most of these companies are trying very hard to make high quality safe products and provide the consumer with an alternative to buying products from the gigantic corporations. They live hand-to-mouth and the $2000 registration fee would put a lot of companies out of business. Furthermore, nothing in this proposed legislation will make cosmetics products safer for the consumer. It is just a lot of bureaucratic fundraising and "make-work" to make it look like the FDA is doing something when, in fact, they are accomplishing nothing. There is already a very effective and over-utilized Great American institution that addresses problems involving faulty products. The lawsuit.

I live in Goshen, Indiana... I am strongly opposed to this legislation! As a consumer of indy products I prefer CHOICE over legislation. I say NO to the FDA globalization act of 2008! I feel that the local indy communities do an adequate job of policing products and making sure that products are labeled accurately - it's a lot easier to email a small business to get product information than to do this with major corporations.... The selection on the main stream market is not meeting my needs as a consumer... but the indy market is!

Please stop the FDA Globalization Act of 2008! My business is very small and paying the $2000 fee would cost me much more than I even make in a year!! An across the board fee does not make sense, as large companies make the fee within minutes, but small companies, such as my own, may not even make that in a year! Thank you for your consideration!

Small business is, indeed, here the difference between a fine martini and Victory Gin...a self-sustaining village and a shopping mall...a handmade crazy quilt and a polyester Wal-Mart smock. I both purchase and produce handmade products and demand the right to do so. Stop the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 and keep the United States a real place. Give this country a chance to survive the coming changes as more than a population of serfs and slaves.

In the year 2008 I find it very sad that I can look around the store where I work or any store for that matter and cant find any products made in the USA. I have to ask myself what do we as a people make in america? I cant even find frozen fish that does not come from another country. My fore fathers built the USA with their minds and their own hands. There was a time when most of what we had is what we made and what we grew! We need to get back there again and to do that small business owners need to have a chance!

I have always had much enjoyment attending street fairs and festivals. At such events I am always searching for the homemade fragrance oils and soaps. I have never had an issue with any of the products that I've bought. I even have sensitive skin. I didn't have a clue the FDA was trying to pass this Globalization Act. This is a terrible shame. I am so thankful I stumbled upon the video and am able to sign this petition. I sincerely hope our Congressmen/women really take a look at the infringement of our freedom as independant businesses and consumers when looking at this act. I urge them to vote NO! Do not pass the FDA Globalization Act of 2008! Sincerely, Ginger Purcell Pittsburgh, PA
